Project Announcement: ELS Awarded Laboratory Project Package for the Karo Mining Project
Effective Laboratory Supplies (ELS) is pleased to announce the award of the laboratory project package for the Karo Mining Project in Zimbabwe, marking an exciting new chapter in a relationship that has been developing since the project’s early concept phase in August 2022.
Located on Zimbabwe’s Great Dyke, the Karo Platinum Project is one of the region’s significant Platinum Group Metals (PGM) developments. From the outset, ELS has worked closely with the project team to support laboratory design, equipment costing, and technical planning to develop a laboratory capable of supporting future mining operations.
As the project now moves into the execution phase, this appointment reflects years of collaborative planning and technical input.
Building a Laboratory Starts Long Before Construction
Mining laboratories are rarely designed overnight.
Long before equipment is delivered to the site, careful planning is required to determine how samples will move through the laboratory, which analytical processes will be performed, and how the facility will operate safely and efficiently each day.
These early decisions influence everything from and equipment selection to future throughput and operational flexibility.
Getting these fundamentals right during the concept stage helps minimise costly redesigns and supports a smoother transition into construction and commissioning.
Supporting the Project from Concept
ELS first became involved with the Karo Mining Project during the early concept stage in 2022.
Since then, the team has provided technical input across several aspects of the laboratory package, including laboratory design, equipment costing, layout development, and project planning.
Rather than preparing individual quotations for standalone items, ELS worked with the client to develop an integrated laboratory package that considers how the complete facility will operate once commissioned.
This approach helps ensure that equipment, workflows, and supporting infrastructure are planned together rather than in isolation.
Planning for Successful Project Delivery
As mining projects evolve, laboratory requirements often change alongside the wider development programme.
Design revisions, updated project schedules and changing operational priorities require laboratory planning to remain flexible while maintaining alignment with the overall project objectives.
Throughout its involvement, ELS has continued to refine the laboratory package, support supplier coordination, and update project costing as required to keep the laboratory aligned with the broader mine development.
This ongoing collaboration is an important part of delivering a laboratory that is practical, efficient, and ready to support future operations.
Moving into Execution
With the project now entering the execution phase, the focus shifts from planning towards implementation.
The laboratory package developed over the past several years provides the foundation for the next stage of the project, where careful coordination will continue to play an important role in successful delivery.
Photographs captured during site visits illustrate ELS’s ongoing involvement throughout the project and demonstrate the value of maintaining close collaboration with clients from concept through to execution.
A Long-Term Approach to Laboratory Projects
Many laboratory suppliers become involved once the equipment has already been specified.
ELS believes greater value can often be created much earlier in the project lifecycle.
By supporting laboratory design, equipment costing, project planning and technical decision-making from the concept stage, clients gain access to practical laboratory expertise before procurement decisions are finalised.
The Karo Mining Project demonstrates this long-term approach. From the initial discussions in 2022 through to today’s execution phase, ELS has remained committed to developing a laboratory solution that supports the mine’s wider objectives.
As this exciting project progresses, ELS looks forward to supporting the next stages of delivery and contributing to another successful mining laboratory project in Africa.
