Kurmuk Gold Project

Project Snapshot

Location: Benishangul-Gumuz Region, Ethiopia
Commodity: Gold

Current Project Status: Approximately 85% of the laboratory equipment package has been delivered to the site. Site execution is scheduled to commence in August 2026.

Scope of Work

ELS is supporting the Kurmuk Gold Project by supplying the laboratory equipment package, redesigning aspects of the laboratory building, coordinating cross-border logistics, and execution.

Working across international borders, the project involves managing the movement of a substantial laboratory package while ensuring delivery remains aligned with the mine’s construction and commissioning schedule.

The Challenge

Remote mining projects require more than equipment procurement. Successful laboratory delivery depends on careful planning, coordinated logistics and precise execution.

For Kurmuk, the challenge was to coordinate a complex equipment package destined for a remote project location while maintaining alignment with site readiness and future installation activities.

Every item required careful staging, inspection, packing, and dispatch to ensure the laboratory could progress efficiently towards installation and commissioning.

The ELS Solution

ELS has coordinated the laboratory package through every stage leading up to site execution, including:

  • Supply of the laboratory equipment package.
  • Laboratory redesign to ensure the facility was fit for purpose.
  • Engineering design.
  • Electrical design.
  • Project logistics planning.
  • Equipment staging and quality checks.
  • Packing and loading for international transport.
  • Delivery coordination.
  • Cross-functional coordination between sales, logistics, warehouse, and project teams.
  • Planning and preparation for site execution.

The project showcases the extensive behind-the-scenes planning required before laboratory installation begins.

Project Progress

The project is progressing according to plan, with approximately 85% of the laboratory equipment package already delivered to the site.

The next phase will see ELS begin site execution activities from mid-August 2026, moving the project from equipment delivery towards installation and commissioning.

Photographs from the project capture the scale of the logistics effort, showing ELS warehouse teams preparing, staging, and loading equipment before dispatch. These images demonstrate the careful coordination required to deliver a complete laboratory package to a remote mining operation.

Why This Project Matters

The Kurmuk Gold Project highlights ELS’s capability to support laboratory projects well beyond South Africa.

It demonstrates our ability to coordinate large-scale laboratory equipment packages for remote mining operations, managing logistics, project planning and delivery while keeping site execution aligned with broader project timelines.

For clients developing new mining laboratories across Africa, Kurmuk provides a strong example of the practical project coordination required to move successfully from warehouse to working laboratory.
